The 5th National Meeting of the Philippine Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (PAPRAS)<\/strong>, hosted by the Philippine Society of Plastic Surgeons, was held from May 12\u201313.<\/strong> Although I was invited to give both a lecture and perform live surgery, due to scheduling constraints, I participated by giving just a presentation. Typically, lecture slots range from 30 minutes to an hour at most, so I was both grateful and slightly pressured when they allocated over two hours solely for my session.<\/p>\n\n\n

The theme of this academic meeting was \u201cFacial Rejuvenation: The Science of Defying Aging.\u201d I presented on \u201cMinhee Ryu\u2019s Facelift Technique and Facial Anatomy\u201d<\/strong><\/em> as well as \u201cSurgery for Periorbital Wrinkles.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> I explained methods to improve both the midface and lower face, taking into account the unique characteristics of East Asian facial structure. I also elaborated on recent anatomical research relevant to these areas. In particular, I shared in-depth insights into midface anatomy and the improvement of facial sagging after facial bone surgeries. While discussing periorbital wrinkle surgery, I introduced my SCI-level research paper to convey the information in more detail. I also mentioned the MAFAC training program\u2014an educational course hosted annually by Melbourne University and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)\u2014which offers hands-on learning experiences in facial anatomy and facelift techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n

The discussion session featured many high-level questions. I did my best to share my clinical experience sincerely, and it was also a valuable learning opportunity for me. I had the chance to greet and take commemorative photos with the past, current, and incoming presidents and board members of the Philippine Society of Plastic Surgeons.<\/p>\n\n\n

It\u2019s said that there are only about 100 board-certified plastic surgeons in the Philippines. Compared to Korea, which now has well over 2,000, the number is quite small. Many had completed their residency and then pursued further training abroad, such as in the U.S. or Taiwan, and their academic and surgical standards were quite high. What stood out most to me was the relatively high number of female specialists, especially among the board members such as the scientific committee chair. This is rare not only in Korea but also in countries like the U.S. and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked in advance what kind of meal I would like for dinner with the board members, I chose Filipino cuisine. The meal mainly consisted of various seafood, beef, and pork dishes. While it was a bit salty and oily to my taste, it was still delicious. The pairing with San Miguel beer was excellent. During our conversation, I was deeply impressed by their sincere interest and understanding of Korea. Though it might have been polite conversation for a guest, they spoke knowledgeably about Korean dramas, cuisine, and even political issues, which left a positive impression on me.<\/p>\n\n\n

This conference left a particularly warm and thoughtful impression. One of the joys of attending international conferences is making academic friends and experiencing diverse cultures. I hope that through sharing and learning from each other\u2019s experiences, we can contribute to the advancement of knowledge in East Asian facelift techniques, facial anatomy, and the correction of facial sagging after bone surgeries.<\/p>\n\n\n
